3D Scan of “Rochers Sculptés de Rothéneuf”

An ensemble of 300 sculptures in north britain made by one man, l’Abbé Fouré ( 1839 - 1910 ). The last sixteen years of his life spent to sculpt, shaping the granit rock of this wild sea cliff. 
This land give opportunity to find many forms from the abstract concretion of rocks to different human face, fictionnal animals like triton, dwarfs, nymph etc.  L’abbé Fouré was this kind of artist who love put his art in his proper life and that he did, he sculpted a few furnishings and many others figures in wood for his personnal collection, sadly disappear in world war II. 

Only the determination of the recognized artist during his lifetime and his stone sculptures remain today. An association of cultural heritage base in St Malo keep this artwork safe and clean and try to protect the impact of tourism and seasalt.

L’Abbé Fouré ( 1839 - 1910 ) est à l’origine de cet ensemble de 300 sculptures réparties sur la falaise de granite noir de Rothéneuf en Bretagne. Il y a consacré les seizes dernières années de sa vie, a sculpter, ciseler, marteler la roche face à la mer “sa vielle amie”.

Cette terre lui permis de trouver d’innombrable formes, partant des concrétions tantôt saillante ou dodues des rochers pour arrivée aux traits d’un visage, à des formes plus oniriques comme celle de nains, de tritons ou de nymphes.  L’abbé Fouré était de ce pour qui l’ Art c’est la Vie et il le faisait entrer jusqu’à ses meubles qu’il sculptait et d’autres multiples figures en bois pour sa collection personnelle tristement perdue pendant la seconde guerre mondiale.

Seule la détermination de cet artiste d’Art brut reconnu de son vivant ( comme en atteste certaine photographie signé par la main de l’abbé ) et ses sculptures de pierres restent aujourd’hui sur les côtes. L’Association des Amis de l’Oeuvre de l’Abbé Fouré à Saint Malo s’occuppe de la préservation de ce patrimoine.
